New York State's Alzheimer's Association chapters and the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center present a VIRTUAL DEMENTIA EDUCATION SERIES FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS Thursday, October 29, 2020 - 8:00 a.m. Care Planning in a Time of Crisis Geriatric syndromes, such as pressure injuries, decline in function, delirium, and incontinence, are often preventable conditions. Pettis will highlight common geriatric syndromes, discuss evidence-based screening and assessment tools, and empower participants with the knowledge to plan and deliver care aimed at preventing or promptly addressing these all-too-common iatrogenic events. Thursday, November 5, 2020 - 8:00 a.m. The 3D's: Dementia, Delirium, and Depression in Geriatric Population Pinkhasov will discuss diagnostic criteria and differential presentation of dementia, delirium, and depression in the geriatric population. Prognostic significance and management strategies will also be explained. Case studies will be presented to illustrate each component. Thursday, November 12, 2020 - 8:00 a.m. COVID-19 in Older Adults Brangman will review the impacts of COVID-19 on older adults with a focus on reducing the effects of isolation and loneliness, especially in those with dementia. Ways to support adults during the pandemic will also be discussed. Thursday, November 19, 2020 - 8:00 a.m. The presentation is an overview of the impact of COVID-19 on older adults with IDD and dementia as well as their caregivers. Pre-existing health care discrepancies and myths and stereotypes will be discussed. Tips for the development of health care advocacy skills and methods of support will be provided. Thursday, February 4, 2021 - 8:00 a.m. Waldrop will focus on facilitating advance care planning conversations between people and their caregivers about end-of-life wishes and disease-specific decision-making well before the final stage, and address elements of care for people with Alzheimer's disease and their families at the end of life. Thursday, February 11, 2021 - 8:00 a.m. Santos will give a brief overview of the multiple neuropsychiatric symptoms and mental health concerns for patients and caregivers, describe the use of several medications to treat these symptoms, and explain how deprescribing medications can be more helpful than continually adding more medications and how many medications are utilized in a temporary manner. Thursday, February 18, 2020 - 8:00 a.m. This presentation will discuss the public health crisis in AD and highlight disparities. The importance of multidisciplinary consultations will be discussed along with the cultural factors that impact clinical presentations and treatment. Thursday, February 25, 2020 - 8:00 a.m. Using representative cases, this presentation will demonstrate how to employ available clinical criteria and diagnostic procedures when making diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and frontotemporal dementia. |
