Acting director of programs, NYY Rory Meters College of Nursing, Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE)

Geriatric syndromes, such as pressure injuries, decline in function, delirium, and incontinence, are often preventable conditions. Pettis will highlight common geriatric syndromes, discuss evidence-based screening and assessment tools, and empower participants with the knowledge to plan and deliver care aimed at preventing or promptly addressing these all-too-common iatrogenic events.

The 3D's: Dementia, Delirium, and Depression in Geriatric Population
with Aaron Pinkhasov, MD, FAPA
Clinical Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, NYU LI School of Medicine, Chairman, Department of Behavioral Health, NY Winthrop Hospital

Pinkhasov will discuss diagnostic criteria and differential presentation of dementia, delirium, and depression in the geriatric population. Prognostic significance and management strategies will also be explained. Case studies will be presented to illustrate each component.

COVID-19 in Older Adults

Brangman will review the impacts of COVID-19 on older adults with a focus on reducing the effects of isolation and loneliness, especially in those with dementia. Ways to support adults during the pandemic will also be discussed.

The presentation is an overview of the impact of COVID-19 on older adults with IDD and dementia as well as their caregivers. Waldrop will focus on facilitating advance care planning conversations between people and their caregivers about end-of-life wishes and disease-specific decision-making well before the final stage, and address elements of care for people with Alzheimer's disease and their families at the end of life.

Santos will give a brief overview of the multiple neuropsychiatric symptoms and mental health concerns for patients and caregivers, describe the use of several medications to treat these symptoms, and explain how deprescribing medications can be more helpful than continually adding more medications and how many medications are utilized in a temporary manner.
